CASA KAKTUS, Santa Cruz la Laguna, Guatemala

Santa Cruz la Laguna

Santa Cruz la Laguna is situated on the shores of Lake Atitlan, which is renowned for being one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Its  expansive waters form the deepest lake in Central America at around 300 metres, and the south shore is flanked by three stunning volcanoes: Atitlan, Toliman and San Perdo.  The edges of the lake are dotted with indigenous Mayan villages, bursting with colour and culture, each with its own identity and atmosphere. Santa Cruz is a peaceful, traditional Kaqchikel village, with stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes and mountains.

Santa Cruz is a great choice if you are looking for somewhere tranquil to base yourself on Lake Atitlan. It is perfect for relaxing, unwinding and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Even though it is a small village, there is still plenty to see and do including hiking, paddle boarding and kayaking, lake scuba-diving, yoga and Spanish classes. You can also visit the local NGO at CECAP and enjoy a beautiful Mayan lunch on their terrace, stop in at their handicraft store, or even take part in their traditional cooking or weaving workshops.

From Santa Cruz, it is easy to explore the rest of the lake. You can easily take one of the regular boats to visit some of the other Mayan villages, each with a unique character and appeal. You can learn about the local Mayan culture, visit weaver's co-operatives, shop for traditional handicrafts, take a coffee tour, climb a volcano or simply have a relaxing lunch in one of the many restaurants. We are always on-hand to assist  in your plans and answer any questions you may have.
